The Supremes

Diana Ross and the Supremes 1960s

When the Supremes first burst onto the scene in 1962 they were nearly always dressed triplet-style in matching outfits. White gloves, pearls, piled hair, cocktail dresses, sequins, feathers and chiffon - the look was wealthy chic. It was matched by etiquette lessons given at Motown on how to walk, talk and behave.
Whilst the decade encompassed a youth revolution with London leading the way - The Beatles, fashion designer Mary Quant (popularising the mini skirt) and model Twiggy - The Supremes stayed pretty much to their evening gown designs.
The Hollywood designer-to-the-stars Bob Mackie who specialised in expensive frocks was responsible for their some of their most fabulous costumes (photo: bottom right).
Such has been the interest in these outfits there's been an exhibition in the US, and even a 'Diana Ross doll' dressed by Mackie.
After Diana went solo in 1970 she did keep an eye on the more natural black look that had evolved, but her preference was to develop the high maintenance look even further with long dresses, expensive jewellery and very big hair.
To this day not much has changed for Diana. Still referred to as Miss Ross, she says, "Being a diva is all about talent, attitude and fashion. Diana Ross and the Supremes have always been on the forefront of fashion..."
