Harold Merrick defense medal 1939-1945 he was enlisted in the auxilliary Fire Service in Sheffield which later became part of the National Fire Service. He was asked to put out fires in many areas including a blaze in Hull, which took him two days to get there. The fire in Hull was in a flour warehouse where the blaze took nearly two weeks to put out. A machine had caught fire and when the workers tried to put it out they instead knocked over another machine making the blaze worse
