As part of Voices 2005, we've been out and about in West Yorkshire to capture
the 'true' voice of the county - how we really speak in different places.
There are LOADS of different accents and dialects even in cities, towns
and villages just down the road from each other!
Castleford's been just one port of call. It's there that we caught up with
Derrick, Andrew and Sophie Robinson - three generations of the same family.
"Your
great grandad used to come from up the shaft into the workshops and
if I'd got a spare ten minutes he used to get the old fire going in
the blacksmith's fire and I used to watch him!"
Derrick
Robinson
Derrick Robinson is 70 and at the age of about 30 went into
the family business in Castleford. He had previously worked at the pit.
The business has expanded over the years and he handed it over to his two
sons when he retired five years ago.
His eldest son, Andrew, now heads the business which has grown from fruit
and vegetable suppliers to wholesale and retail distributors of a range
of products including fireworks and tropical plants.
Sophie, Andrew's daughter has benefitted from what is now quite a large
business concern and is educated privately in West Yorkshire.
The Robinsons spoke to us about all sorts of things,
but we've selected just a few short clips to give you a taster of HOW
they speak:
Derrick explains about his old
job working at Fryston Pit - and learning the tricks-of-the-trade!
Andrew tells Sophie about his
first wage packet, how much it would buy then - and how little it
would buy now!
Sophie explains what she knows
about serving an apprenticeship at the pit!
The family
talk about the 'joys' of Trick Or Treating - a highpoint of the
year - but not for Derrick!
