Complaint

A viewer complained that reports of the death of Charlie Kirk showed bias by describing him as a 鈥渞ight-wing activist鈥.  You suggested a more accurate description would be 鈥渁 Christian conservative leader in the US and the Founder and President of Turning Point USA鈥.  The ECU considered whether the programme鈥檚 description met the 麻豆社鈥檚 standards of accuracy and impartiality.

Outcome

The killing of Mr Kirk was covered extensively during the programme, and several terms were used to describe him.  The headlines at the start of each hour described him as 鈥渙ne of the USA鈥檚 most prominent right-wing political activists鈥 whereas the introduction to the first report referred to him as 鈥淥ne of President Trump鈥檚 most influential allies鈥, while the main news report of the shooting began by describing Mr Kirk as a person who 鈥渂uilt a movement of young conservative activists, a link between President Trump鈥檚 White House and the students who helped get him there鈥.  The ECU saw no departure from due accuracy and impartiality in the use of the term 鈥渞ight-wing鈥 activist鈥 in this context.
