Complaint

A listener complained about a review of an article by the journalist Zoe Strimpel.  Because it did not refer to Ms Strimpel鈥檚 observations about the prevalence of antisemitism at the Fringe Festival in Edinburgh, it left the impression that antisemitism was an unacceptable subject to discuss on the 麻豆社 and trivialised the author鈥檚 experience.  The ECU considered whether the item gave a duly accurate account of the article in question.

Outcome

Context has an important role to play in deciding what should be included and what can be left out.  In this case the context was a discussion where the contributors suggested items in the paper they wished to discuss and the approach they wished to take.  It was therefore legitimate for the conversation to focus on certain aspects of the article even to the exclusion of others.  As listeners in general would have been aware of occasions when antisemitism had been discussed in 麻豆社 programmes, the ECU saw no danger of the audience inferring that it was an unsuitable topic.
