Complaint
A listener complained the morning bulletins failed to give important context on the United States’ role in the Gaza conflict by conveying the impression it was a neutral mediator. The ECU considered whether this was a breach of the Â鶹Éç Guidelines on accuracy and impartiality.
Outcome
These were brief news reports on the status of negotiations on a ceasefire. They did not purport to look at the deeper motives of those involved or the role of the US. The guidelines do not demand that every aspect of a story is explained every time, and the ECU did not agree that without such analysis listeners would have assumed the US was an entirely impartial observer. It was apparent from the bulletins that Hamas felt the US deal had failed to honour what had previously been agreed, and the deal did not meet its core demands. Israel, by contrast, was reported to have signed it.
