Complaint

The programme included an interview with Dr Tanya Haj-Hassan, a paediatric intensive care doctor who had recently worked in Gaza and who had experience of the impact of Israeli military action on medical personnel and facilities.  A viewer complained that it was false balance for the presenter to put to her the Israeli position on casualties among medical personnel because it represented an 鈥渋nappropriate and irrelevant perspective鈥 on the matter.  The ECU considered the complaint in the light of the 麻豆社鈥檚 editorial standards of impartiality.

Outcome

Representing alternative viewpoints does not imply endorsement of them, and may (as in this instance) provide an opportunity for interviewees to rebut them.  The ECU found nothing in the exchange complained of which was inconsistent with the 麻豆社鈥檚 commitment to impartiality.
