Mark Harris gives hope at the Boardmasters

Cornish Rip

Three South West surfers carry British hopes as the Rip Curl Boardmasters - taking place at Fistral beach in Newquay - reaches the third round stage.

Newquay's Russell Winter and Mark Harris along with South Devon's Matt Capel are the only remaining UK surfers remaining in the 5star World Qualifyng Series event at Fistral Beach.

Newquay's Oli Adams could join the trio, but first has to defeat Warwick Wright from South Africa and American's Che Stang and Chris Waring in his round two tie.

Winter, the top British seed at the event, goes in heat three against Australian's Josh Lewin, Drew Courtney and South African Daniel Redman.

Harris, meanwhile, goes in the opening heat against former WCT stalwart and World Pro Surfer representative Jake Paterson, Brazilian Adriano de Souza and Wade Goodall.

It is one of the toughest encounters of the round of 96 and Harris will have to surf at his very best to progress.

Capel has the luxury of paddling out in heat 9 where he is up against Brazilian pair Nelo Dunga and Jean Da Silva and American Alex Gray.

Several Foster's ASP World Tour surfers are also in the draw including Brazilian Bernardo Miranda, and Australians Ben Dunn, Shaun Cansdell, Adrian Buchan and Troy Brooks.

Other high profile surfers听 include 2005 World No. 8 Nathan Hedge, 2003 and World No. 6 Kieren Perrow.

Earlier in the competition, eight UK surfers won through their round heats.

Harris, Johnny Fryer, Sam Lamiroy, Capel, and Oli Adams made it into the round of 144.

Lamiroy, from Perranporth, was one of the early standouts, defeating former ASP Europe Pro Junior winner Josch Scmeltzer and Bude's Joss Ash.

"I'm glad I made this one, I just checked the heats yesterday and realized I would be out in the water very early," said Lamiroy. "It ended very good for me, so I'm just happy to get through."

Lamiroy was later eliminated in Round 2 by former 2004 European Pro Surf Tour champion Justin Mujica, from Portugal.
