Concert Information
Marking the year of his centenary, this afternoon we hear three works by the prolific Polish born-Jewish composer Mieczys艂aw Weinberg - who spent the majority of his life in Russia after fleeing Germany's invasion of Poland in 1939.
Alongside the world premiere of Dawn 鈥 we also hear Weinberg鈥檚 first Flute Concerto. Written for and dedicated to the famous Russian flautist Alexander Korneyev, today 鈥 the 麻豆社 Philharmonic鈥檚 own Principal Flute, Alex Jakeman, performs it.
Of the 22 symphonies Weinberg wrote 鈥 this afternoon鈥檚 live broadcast puts his Fourth in the spotlight. With haunting solo clarinet passages and a final movement full of character 鈥 it has echoes of Shostakovich鈥檚 touch which is understandable considering the close and long-standing friendship Weinberg formed with his fellow composer.
The concert will begin with Mussorgsky鈥檚 prelude to an opera that was never to be...
In this afternoon鈥檚 concert 鈥 please be aware that the use of smartphones will be encouraged to allow audience to experience an exciting development for the 麻豆社 Philharmonic.
