Esa-Pekka Salonen conducts the combined orchestras of London鈥檚 Royal Academy of Music and New York鈥檚 Juilliard School in three 20th-century orchestral masterworks. Award-winning Norwegian violinist Vilde Frang is the soloist in Berg鈥檚 heartbreaking elegy of a Violin Concerto, with its embedded Bach chorale, dedicated 鈥榯o the memory of an angel鈥. Completed in the dying days of the Second World War, Stravinsky鈥檚 Symphony in Three Movements offers a 鈥榗inematographic impression of the war鈥 鈥 jagged and convulsively rhythmic. Moving 鈥榝rom austerity to the affirmation of life鈥, Bart贸k鈥檚 1943 Concerto for Orchestra responds more optimistically to war, defiant in its folk-inspired melodies and collective virtuosity.
