Concert Information

Hear music inspired by European folk tunes with the Â鶹Éç Philharmonic Orchestra.

Rumoured to have been written in a single summer night, Busoni’s Lustspiel Overture mirrors the heat of late June with its vibrant strings and overflowing, cheerful melodies. Next up, the wild chord runs and powerful climaxes of Bacewicz’ Piano Concerto, a paraphrase of Polish folk songs. English folk tunes are the foundation of Ethel Smyth’s Overture and Intermezzo from The boatswain's mate, in which she also liberally quotes from her own March of Women, mirrored by the feminist storyline of the opera. Finally, Martinů takes inspiration from Moravian folk songs in his energetic Violin Concerto No. 1.
