Track Record: An alumna of Grange Hill comprehensive school (she played Cheryl Webb in the mid-80s), Amma Asante has successfully made the transition from child actor to writer/director. Her 2004 feature debut, A Way Of Life, was a bleak but compelling look at racism in a coastal Welsh town and earned her several prestigious awards - including the Carl Foreman award at the BAFTAs for special achievement by a British director/producer/writer in their first feature film.
Go Figure: Amma made two appearances in 90s sitcom Birds Of A Feather.
UK OK? A Way Of Life was co-funded in England and Wales, even though it does for Welsh tourism what Titanic did for cruise liners.
Yes, Really: Among Amma's fellow students at the Barbara Speake stage school in Acton were Naomi Campbell and Michelle Gayle.
