1641 rebellion
- Dr. Mary O'Dowd

Audio Clips

Well, a favourite exam question is "Did the Ulster Plantation lead to the 1641 Rebellion or Rising?". It used to be seen that there was a very inevitable cause-and-effect link between the two.

Today, historians would argue that the Plantation was one of the reasons for the rebellion of 1641: there were others - there were the immediate circumstances of what happens in Ireland, in the Dublin administration in particular in the late 1630s, 1640, 1641 which also contribute very strongly to the outbreak of the rebellion.

There would be different views but I would be of the view that the Ulster Plantation does have a strong relationship to what happens in 1641.
