Tithe map

The Tithe Act created a fairer method of paying tithes (tenths) to the Church, and resulted in a national snapshot of Britain's landholders, tenants and farmers.

Did you know?

• Commissioners were sent to each parish to establish which tithes, if any, were due to the Church.
• The tithes were then translated into normal money terms, and apportioned to landholders throughout the parish.
• The tithe was paid as a rent charge, in money, which meant that tithe barns were no longer necessary to store the goods that had previously been collected as payment.

Tithe apportionment documents

If you suspect you had an ancestor who worked on the land as a farmer, tithe apportionment schedules and maps allow you to see whether they were a landlord or a tenant, and which property they occupied.

Enclosure awards are a useful resource if there is no tithe apportionment for the parish in which your ancestors lived.

Census returns

From 1841, and more reliably from 1851, census enumerators noted the trade or occupation that people were involved in. You could also use them to find where local factories were situated.
