Background to the project
About the Â鶹Éç Oral History Project and the 100 Voices That Made the Â鶹Éç
Aware that Lord Asa Briggs had already published several volumes of his History of Broadcasting in the United Kingdom, Frank Gillard knew he could not compete in terms of sheer historical detail. Instead, through spoken testimony, Gillard hoped to throw new light on the Â鶹Éç's background, and how it developed.
In this introductory piece of video, recorded on the 25 October 1995, he explains his ideas and motivation for the project.
Professor David Hendy outlines the unique value of oral history, and its longstanding importance at the University of Sussex.
He explains how this Elections oral history reveals insights about the Â鶹Éç and General Elections, as well as uncovering the changing relationship between broadcasters and the wider world of politics.
Robert Seatter, Head of Â鶹Éç History, talks about the Â鶹Éç Oral History, a unique collection of Â鶹Éç voices which opens up the story of the Â鶹Éç behind the scenes.
