The Signal Box Inn

Pint-sized pub

Measuring just 8ft by 8ft and situated next to a railway, it is easy to miss. No, it's not a children鈥檚 playhouse, in fact it鈥檚 a pub, and it鈥檚 laying claim to the title of smallest pub in the world.

The Signal Box In is situated in Cleethorpes, at the Coast Light Railway.

The landlord, Andrew McCall, has made a formal application to the Guinness Book of Records in the hope that his miniature watering hole can officially take the title, which is currently held by Sam's Bar in Colorado Springs in the US, at 109 square feet.

The pub was a former railway signal box. It has four stools and can accommodate a maximum of four customers seated and two standing at the same time.

It's a tight squeeze with only 6 people at a time.

Of the pub鈥檚 apparent success, McCall says that the idea is still a novelty, and so he expects many more locals and tourists alike to come and join him for a pint or two.

Despite its tiny size, the pub has five pumps and serves up specific real ales. The Signal Box Inn has been in business for just a few days and McCall, who mans the bar alone, says that in a mad rush of six people, he is rushed off his feet.

He is sometimes assisted behind the bar by his wife and says that if the idea takes off, he may hire a doorman.

McCall decided to open the little pub after the idea came to him while working behind the bar at a 1940s weekend held at the railway.

He says that, should customers feel the pull of their pints and wish to dance, they can do so in the beer garden adjoining the pub.

McCall has become something of a celebrity in Cleethorpes, with reporters and cameramen a regular feature on his front lawn.

He says his biggest problem now is finding a diminutive cellar-man to work in his tiny cellar.
