When
the unleavened pita breads loaded onboard in Liverpool and the amazing
long life 鈥淏imbo鈥 bread from Portugal finally ran out,
it was time for action to bring some life into our breakfast menu,
which has been reduced to cereals only in the last 2/3 days.
So
the 2 watches (named wrap watch and broach watch for operational
reasons) each appointed a baker in chief to bake bread during the
12.00-4.00am watch.
At
first, Steve Watt excelled and produced really tasty rolls for us
all for breakfast, and Benny Benstead fell somewhat short, serving
up some very heavy rock like offerings.
But,
after some practice, Benny yesterday suddenly produced the most
sublime range of bread, crumpets, and scones. We are all now convinced
that Benny is really a master baker at home in Jersey and was only
giving Steve a bit of a head start.
Each
morning now, the new watch up eagerly peers into the oven to see
what has been produced the night before by Benny or Steve, and discussion
rages as to which/what is better than before etc. It seems competition
at sea is not restricted merely to ocean racing!
