Hiya folks
I thought I'd
come down and seek the comfort of the hot bit DRY nav room to write
you a short diary! It's almost 3am local time (0700GMT) and only
another hour to go before this watch is over, and we can dry off
and get some sleep!
Well what a
difference a couple of days make. On the 16th August, Ian was almost
having a nervous breakdown as he watched our very impressive lead
drop to still an umpressive lead, but none the less, the other boats
were catching us up. We were struggling to find any wind to keep
TGS Jersey moving, and the afternoon's sched on that day should
us having a really low run of 15 nautical miles.
However, tonight,
we are sailing under the yankee 2, which is a smaller sail, and
have had 2 reefs in the mainsail, to try and reduce sail area as
we battle with much stronger winds. Waves constantly crashing over
the decks, and we've just watched a thunderstorm with it's brilliant
flashes of lightninng glowing the skies not too far away from where
we are! The latest sched shows a very good run of 109 nautical miles.
And I'm glad to report that Ian is finally getting his breath back!
Scheds play
a vital role in life on board. Groans when we hear that other boats
have taken miles off us, and jubilation when we hear that we have
taken miles off others. These are plotted on the computer show which
shows a muh better idea of where the boats are, and whilst we watch
the weather systems, we also try to gauge what they mght be having.
Although the
winds have been 20-30knots for the last 24 hours or so, we are under
no illusion that this will be with us all the way. So whilst we
are under whites, we are enjoying the ride, until the winds drrop
a little as predicted by the weatherfaxes.
Only 504 nautical
miles to go to New York
Lots of love
Tracey
