MacMillan coffee mornings

MacMillan coffee mornings help funding.

Cancer support volunteers

Macmillan Cancer Support (MCS) is urgently looking for volunteers across Kent to help raise vital funds for people affected by cancer.

MCS has been growing from strength to strength for nearly 100 years offering grants, help-lines, websites, funding for facilities and of course the famous Macmillan nurses. But none of it would be possible without the valuable help of their volunteers.

Dominic King met husband and wife Tony and Jean Mardel, who both volunteer for Macmillan and have both been affected by cancer in the past. Jean鈥檚 brother sadly died of cancer and when Jean was asked along to a Macmillan Fundraising Committee meeting, she decided it was a chance to give back some of the help that Macmillan had provided for her brother and his family through that difficult time.

Tony鈥檚 mother has also battled with breast cancer and had to have a mastectomy ten years ago, leading Tony to also join the Macmillan team.

Jean and Tony are part of a committee which hold coffee mornings, garden parties, do sponsored walks and organise store collections to raise funds. They also have a loyal group of volunteers who, although they don鈥檛 want to be on a committee, collect with them and help at events. Jean says 鈥淚n volunteering you make new friends, broaden your outlook, visit new places and gain far more than you give鈥.听

MCS would like to hear from anyone interested in volunteering for them, raising money through events, collections and other great fundraising. These roles can often fit in around work or family commitments.

If you think this could be you or you know somebody who might like to get involved with Macmillan Cancer Support, contact our Action Desk on 08000 680 675 or email the team.
