Apprenticeship students have been provided with some core activities, centred around a scenario based on work at a Residential Care Home. The student takes on the role of a Key Worker assigned to a client who has just arrived at the home. The client is an elderly lady in the wheelchair. The student is required to read the client's case history and talk to the client in order to gain enough information to put together a Care Plan. Following this, the patient will need to reorganise the client's room to accommodate some of her own furniture and make it suitable for a wheelchair user.
The Flash Activities
The student has been given some documentary resources in order to complete the activities:
- A Care Plan: This is blank and the student is required to complete one section based on the information they gather.
- A Case History for the client, Mrs. Moore.
- Extracts from the National Standards Minimum Guidance Document: This contains extracts from the Environment section.
Part 1: The Care Plan
Talking to Mrs Moore
In order to complete the Care Plan, the student needs to talk to the client, Mrs. Moore in order to assess her needs. This Flash activity allows them to ask a series of ten specific questions. They are given three options of how they would choose to ask the question. This is aimed communicating effectively in potentially sensitive situations.
Part 2: Room Organisation
There are two activities in this section. The scenario states that Mrs. Moore would like to replace some of the original furniture in the room with some of her own furniture. The student is required to organise the room in a way that will allow Mrs. Moore to move around easily in her wheelchair.
The student needs to refer to the National Standards Guidance and be sure that they understand the issues involved.
Conversion
For this activity, the student has been given measurements for Mrs. Moore's furniture. It is in imperial units and needs to be converted to metric units.
Room Organisation
The student is now asked to remove the furniture to be replaced. Then they are given the opportunity to plan the room by dragging and dropping the items of furniture into the room plan.
Further Activities
The students have also been provided with a series of further activities aimed at developing their communication skills.
Full details of the activities are in the Apprentices section:
