Further Activities: Key Skills Communication, Level 2

The following activities are all based on the activities and related resources provided for the Apprentice in Part 1: The Care Plan. They rely on the student using Mrs. Moore's Case History as well as the information they collect about her from the Talking to Mrs. Moore Flash activity.

These further activities can be presented by the tutor with the aim of providing evidence for the student's portfolio work that meets Level 2 Communication criteria. The instructions below give details of the task, the criteria it meets and the guidance the tutor should give to the student.

1. Read and summarise two documents on the Internet on the topics/issues that arise from the admission (e.g. the effects of stroke, hearing impairment, etc.). One of these sites must contain an image. This will meet Key Skill Communication, Level 2 criteria: C2.2. Students should be asked to:

  • Produce printouts /photocopies of the work researched with the information intended for use highlighted (work product)
  • Attach references by giving author/book title +page ref of work/web address and the date the information was accessed (work product)

2. Disseminate the information by giving a talk to colleagues. This will meet Key Skill Communication, Level 2 criteria: C2.1b. Students should be asked to:

  • Write a summary of the talk given by you to colleagues; attach any brief notes you used.
  • Obtain at least one witness testimony on how your talk went.

3. Follow the talk with a group discussion. This will meet Key Skill Communication, Level 2 criteria: C2.1a. Students should be asked to:

  • Write a summary of the discussion that followed and gain witness feedback on your contribution to the discussion.

4. Produce a 500 word report. This will be in the form of a Care Plan following an appropriate and realistic format - i.e. one that would be expected in the workplace. This will meet Key Skill Communication, Level 2 criteria: C2.3. Students should be asked to:

  • Use the Internet to research potential sources of information. Within all of the sources identified, 2 need to be at least 500 words long and should be printed out as portfolio evidence.
  • Read documents and highlight points that will assist in understanding the client's conditions.
  • Produce a draft copy of the Care Plan Report using an appropriate layout of your choice and include a picture or diagram. Print these off for portfolio evidence.
  • Proof read the report and amend any spelling /grammatical errors.
  • Make any required changes to layout and add an appropriate front cover and print off a final version to use as portfolio evidence.

5. Produce a letter on behalf of the client. The student has found out from Mrs. Moore's Case History and interview, that she has not been in touch with her sister for some time and would to get in touch with her. The student should be directed to write a letter on Mrs. Moore's behalf, informing the sister that she is staying at the Residential Home and would like to get in touch. This will meet Key Skill Communication, Level 2 criteria: C2.3. Students should be asked to:

  • Identify the purpose of the letter.
  • Make some notes on the potential content. Print out a copy of these notes to use as portfolio evidence.
  • Identify a suitable letter layout.
  • Choose a suitable letter salutation.
  • Introduce the subject matter in the first paragraph and continue the letter using one or more further paragraphs.
  • End letter using an appropriate format - to correspond with letter type / salutation.
  • Print out a copy of the draft letter.
  • Proof read the content and amend any factual, spelling and grammatical errors and print off the final version of the letter to use as portfolio evidence.
