Making it work.
Here are some ideas that might help you to plan work effectively.
  • When do I study? Some people work best in the morning, others at night. Identify when you are at your best and try and plan your study routine around the time.
  • Where do I study? Make sure you have somewhere where you can spread out your work and that the environment is suitable, with the minimum of distractions.
  • Difficult subjects first! Putting things off only delays the inevitable, leaving it looming in the background. Break the task into small sections and congratulate yourself when you complete one. Study when you are fresh, as your brain processes information more easily. Don’t put it off or get distracted.
  • Keep going: don’t get distracted by TV programmes or friends on the telephone. Take regular short breaks and keep focused.
  • When you have achieved one of the targets you have set, take a short break and give yourself a treat. Don’t forget to tick it off your list of activities.
  • Fillers: keep a list of any smaller tasks that you may have so you can get them out of the way if you have any gaps in your timetable.
  • Learning styles: be aware of your own learning style. Do you work best alone or with a friend? With music playing or when it is quiet? Are you a visual or auditory learner? Take a look at the learning style quiz if you don’t know.
  • Most importantly, make sure you leave time to enjoy yourself.
Have a go at our quiz to check your learning style.
