Chris’s database is starting to take shape. It now has three tables — one for members, one for stock and one for transactions. He’s going to set up some records in the stock table first, so he can keep track of what DVDs and videos he has in the store.

For each DVD or video he will fill in several fields. These may be title, genre, date purchased etc. Placed together these fields will form one record.

key point A record is one entry in the database, which is made up of several fields.

A database record showing fields filled in for title, genre, etc.

The field headings will be the same for all the DVDs and videos, although the data within the fields will be different. Sometimes the field is made of numbers, and sometimes it is made of text.

Go to the next screen to look at how to find records using the primary key, and types of field entries.
