Q2.

A department store has had to increase the prices of televisions by 12%. The new price of a particular model is £249. An old customer persuades them to sell one of the televisions for the pre-increase price. How much do they sell it to her for?
(2 marks)

Answer and commentary

When dealing with complicated percentages, it is best to work with decimals.
12% is the same as 0.12.
The £249 is the original price with 12% added on.
So, £249 = 1.12 x the original price.
So, the original price = £249 ÷ 1.12
We can do this on a calculator and get: 222.3214286
Money must always be rounded to 2 decimal places, which gives us £222.32
Answer: £222.32
