Q12.

Paint is sold in 3 litre tins at £4.99. Each tin can cover 10m2. A painter needs to paint the walls of a room 4.3m by 2.6m. The room height is 2.2m and there is a large picture window 2.2m by 1.5m in one of the long walls. How much will the paint cost?

Answer and commentary
We need to find out how many tins of paint are needed to cover the walls. That is how many lots of 10m2 need to be covered.
Think about the room unfolded as one long rectangle:
Room expanded as a rectangle
So, it's one rectangle with length 4.3 + 2.6 + 4.3 + 2.6 = 13.8m
So, the area is 13.8 x 2.2 = 30.36m2
But we don't need to paint the window which is 2.2 x 1.5 = 3.3m2
So the painted area will be 30.36 - 3.3 = 27.06m2
So, we will need 3 tins (remember: each tin can cover 10m2). The tins will cost 3 x 4.99 = 14.97

Answer: £14.97
