Q14.
A supermarket pays £45.70 per pack of 10,000 carrier bags. In a survey they discover that customers will re-use stronger bags on average 10 times. The stronger bags
cost £48.50 for a pack of 5000.
A store normally gives out 300 000 of the old bags in one month. How much will they save if everyone switches to stronger bags?
Answer and commentary
300 000 ÷ 10 000 = 30. So, normally the supermarket uses 30 packs of old bags.
That cost them 30 x £45.70 = £1371
The new bags are stronger, so only one will be used for every 10 of the old ones.
300 000 ÷ 10 = 30 000 new type bags
30 000 ÷ 5 000 = 6 packs
That will cost 6 x £48.50 = £291
The store will save 1371 - 291 = £1080. That's a worthwhile saving!
Answer: £1080
