Level 2 - Tutor's Toolkit - Application of Number: Carrying Out Calculations Index
I wish to look at:
C1 - Show clearly your methods of carrying out calculations and give the level of accuracy of your results
This section looks at how students should show and present their methods of calculation. It deals with annotation, accuracy (how to round up) and the use of units.
C2 - Carry out calculations involving two or more steps, with numbers of any size
Information guiding tutors to sections of the Number Toolkit that deal with carrying out multi-step calculations.
C3 - Convert between fractions, decimals and percentages
How to convert between fractions and percentages and how to choose the largest (or smallest) quantity from a list of fractions, decimals and percentages.
C4 - Convert measurements between systems
This shows how students need to be able to convert between imperial and metric systems ursing both rules of thumb and given conversion factors. There is also information on how to deal with currency calculations and how to convert currencies using a given conversion rate.
C5 - Work out areas and volumes
This section shows how to calculate areas of rectangles and triangles as well as areas of compound shapes composed from rectangles and triangles. It goes on to provide information on how to calculate the volumes of cuboids and shows how students should interpret of packing diagrams.
C6 - Work out dimensions from scale drawings
This details what students need to know about working with scale drawings and includes the use of units.
C7 - Use proportion and calculate ratios where appropriate
This sections provides details on what students need to know about ratio notation - how to write correct ratio notation and how to simplify ratios. It also show how to make proportion calculations.
C8 - Compare sets of data with a minimum of 20 items
This details what needs to be known about making comparisons using percentages. It also explains how to calculate the mean, median and mode and shows how to establish the most appropriate method to use in different situations.
C9 - Use range to describe the spread within sets of data
This explains how to calculate the range of a set of data given as both a list and a table.
C10 - Understand and use given formulae
This section shows how to calculate using a given formula, how to make reverse calculation using a given formula and how to use negative numbers in formulae.
C11 - Check your methods in ways that pick up faults and make sure your answers make sense
Information on what students need to know about using approximate calculations to comment on the reasonableness of an accurate calculation. This section also shows how to check that caculations are made in the right order of magnitude.
