When you talk to someone in French you have to decide
whether to address them as tu or
vous. Both mean 'you' but they
are not interchangeable.
Tu is informal, friendly,
family-based. It is used for a close colleague, a friend or family member
and for a child. Vous is more formal and respectful.
Vous is also used for two or more people, whether you'd address them as
tu or vous individually.
If you're getting
to know somebody and they invite you to say tu to them, you'll hear
On se dit tu? or
On se tutoie? - 'Shall we say
tu to each other?'.
A likely answer is
Oui, bien
sûr! - 'Yes, of course!'.
