Immigration in France

Contemporary French society has been influenced by the influx of foreigners from a range of different cultures.

However, the proportion of foreigners living in France has hardly changed since 1931 when there were 2.7 million immigrants representing 6.6% of the whole population. In 1990 the percentage was 7.4%, a total of 4.2 million people. Many have come from Algeria and Morocco, and from Portugal, Spain and Italy.

Immigrants' children born in France can automatically qualify as French citizens.
