Travel is one of the
most popular leisure-time activities in Germany. Growing prosperity and shorter
working hours have meant more leisure time and holidays. In 1995 nearly 60% of
those over the age of 14 took a holiday of at least five days away from home.
The turnover currently
generated by the leisure industry represents 8% of the German economy as a
whole. According to surveys, the typical German family spends about one fifth
of its income on leisure activities.
Approximately 260,000 clubs
and associations as well as the state, churches and municipalities offer
leisure activities at sport centres, swimming pools and libraries as well as
hobby courses and evening classes on art, science, literature,
music etc.
