Energetic and larger than life, Mr Torn has an innovative approach to the classroom. He frequently breaks into song, taking on whimsical characters that he鈥檚 created to bring history to life.
For example, in a lesson on the French revolution he became the 鈥淒uke de Pomme Fritte鈥, telling students about the concerns of the nobility under the reign of King Louis XVI. He鈥檚 been described as the life and soul of the school by teachers and pupils alike. But it鈥檚 not all fun and games.听 In a moving and personal interview he told me that: 鈥淭eaching is a chance to change people鈥檚 lives. Every day I come into the classroom, that鈥檚 what I aim to do. To change people鈥檚 lives鈥. David grew up in Hackney and survived abusive family circumstances. But he refuses to accept background as a reason for failure. He said: 鈥淚t鈥檚 about raising [their] expectations in life 鈥 getting students to move the barriers forward, and be the best they can be鈥.
