Eid celebrations in Rusholme

Eid Mubarak!

The end of Ramadan marks the start of celebrations for thousands of Manchester Muslims. Whether you're partying in Rusholme, or at home with the family, tell us how you're planning to mark Eid ul Fitr.

Eid ul Fitr

  • begins weekend 13/14 November
  • celebration times 1800 - 0400
  • motorists should avoid Rusholme
  • expect traffic delays in both directions
  • Wilmslow Rd closed at times
  • follow Eid diversion signs
  • use alternative routes if poss.

Every year during Eid, Rusholme is a sea of colour and noise. Muslims dressed in their best clothes converge on the area, some in stretch limos or open top cars sounding car horns, playing music and waving Pakistani flags.

It's a huge celebration for all devout Muslims who have endured a month of abstinence: during the 30 days of Ramadan, all adult Muslims must give up food, drink, smoking and sex during the hours of daylight. The festival of Eid is to thank Allah for His help and strength over the previous month.

Celebrating Eid
Celebrating Eid on the Curry Mile

The first day always begins with special prayers at the main mosque, followed later in the day by a large celebratory lunch at the house of the senior member of the family. Everywhere children receive gifts of cash and new clothes. But when the new moon is seen in the sky, the partying really begins...

However according to the police, some take it too far. Celebrations in Rusholme have been marred by a small minority driving recklessly in flash cars, 'revving engines or doing handbrake turns in an attempt to 'impress' onlookers' but with little regard for the safety of others. This year, Greater Manchester Police say anti-social behaviour will not be tolerated.

What do you think of the police concerns? Do you agree that some are spoiling Eid? Or is it only fair that young people get the chance to let their hair down? Tell us what you're doing for Eid this year.

i feel that the muslim community as a whole are very sensible and celebrate in a peaceful and more serene fashion, however a minority in the younger generation have lost all meaning of what eid is and are simply looking for a time to 'show off' or act increadiby immature, they do not understand the true meaning for eid and are taking advantage of the celebration to prove to the non-muslinm that muslims as a whole cant celebrate in a socialy acceptable manner

To read peoples complaints about noise and holligans on eid in Manchester! Have you EVER been up town on christmas eve or new years eve! or even on a friday or satuarday night,I do not think its just the attitude of just some muslim youngsters but the attitude of young Britians in general (muslims or not). Due to the binge drinkin behaviuor of Britain today ALCHOL is the certain cause and muslims (not all of them) are no exception they are born here they adopted the same mentality so they act the same way as any other idiotic Brit of whaterver religion does when they've had 1 to many, i think thats where the problem lies BINGE DRINKING and its about time the goverment took a look in to it.

I like the fact that in Manchester we can have other faiths celebrating parts of there religion. What I don’t like is that eid turns rusholme in to a no-go zone for non Muslims. Due to my g/f living there i have to endure all the disgusting acts that a lot young Muslims believe acceptable. Would you think its fair if i spat on you or asked if your g/f "wants some real man" I don’t think you would or what if i blocked your car in you find it ok? nope did not think so. It cant carry on like this. Its disgusting i think that the police should be a lot firmer with the handling of this and if so move it to one of the local parks or if it gets too out of control stop it happening. (i don’t mean to stop Muslims celebrating but to stop it happening on the main road) I know if it was the other way round, it would have been stopped along time ago.

To all the Hooligans- If the christian minority in Pakistan were to celebreate christmas the way we celebrate eid here, how do you think the majority pakistani's would take it there. I think they would not tolerate it, so therefor i really think we are pushing our luck with the non muslim community in England. Beside the young once are completely being disrespectful and taking advantage in this country. Just because your born in this country does not make you more special than civilied person living in Pakistan. I feel very strongly about this. I wander if your parents actually know what you get upto on Wilsmslow Road!!!

Eid is a time to spend with the family and remebering Allah. Why these youngsters behave as hooligans is a mystery as this is not encouraged by Islam. Islam encourages people to respect all people regardless of what relgion they are. There should be organised events which can be fun for all the family and is away from the roads. This would give opportunity for people from other faiths to join in and gain an insight into what Islam really is.

i myself went to celebrate Eid at Manchester and was very disappointed at some of the behaviour of the Muslims who were celebrating eid. I, myself being a Muslim felt ashamed of the way some people recognise the celebrating of eid. i thank the police for their courage and hard work during the day and urge my Muslim brothers and sisters to celebrate Eid the right way, which is to spend time with their families and to thank Allah for the month of Ramadhan and not to act like hooligans and put others' life in danger. I was there on Wilmslow Road, it was a good night only marred by a few yobs who took it too far but the police are jobs aswell by man handling people in an almost war like manner- despicable! It will be the last time I go

Angry Tired Bus User
Why during Eid are the boy racers of the Muslim community allowed to block the main thoroughfare to South Manchester, beeping their horns and being generally obnoxious in attitude and volume? It is dangerous - think of all those ambulances that utilise this route to get to and from patients in need. It is a public nuisance. If at Christmas time the Christian population indulged in the same activity they would be arrested for breach of the peace.

Ramadan / Eid has no interest to me living in a Christian country. My thoughts and prayers this Remembrance Sunday were firmly with our brave men and women who lost their lives fighting for this country. This country should do the same as Muslim countries when it comes to looking after ones own heritage, religion & interests first.

The festival of Eid is a great one and I feel privelaged to live in a city where such multicultural diversity can occur. However, having been on Oxford road myself, thick with traffic, I couldn't help but feel somewhat uneasy about attitudes of some of the muslims. Getting called at from a limo or having a flag waved aggresively at you, makes you feel somewhat unwanted, as a young white brit male, on your own road, when you're getting a kebab. I would agree that the police concerns have a foundtation in reality - some really do spoil it for everyone else.

im all for the celebrations but why the horns?? They are keeping me awake!!

Eid is celbrated in various ways. Obviously the younger more rebellious group celebrate it in a quite an unislamic fashion as they are quite unaware of the real meaning of Eid, and they just use it as an excuse for having a good time, when the prior month of Ramadhan is over (lets face it these people have fasted hard and should have developed a greater sense of religion and been more conscience of Allah - god). But I can understand when some of the kids go a little wild. (Didn't we all when we were young). The older generation (anything from early 20s upwards - majority of muslims) celebrate it in a more sedate and islamic fashion, by staying at home with family, visiting relatives, and thanking Allah (god) for all his blessings bestowed on them. These people still by no means have a very good time but they obviously see and celebrate Eid in the way it is meant to be. Hopefully as time goes by the younger generation will mature and develop a better understanding of Al-Islam (religion of almost 2 Billion muslims all over the globe), then they shall celebrate it in the right way Insha-Allah (god willing). Beleive me I've been there and done it!!! Just want to say a big thank you to The police in Manchester who try their best to keep the festivities calm, and try to stop any trouble causers (who tend to mostly be drunk or high) fromruining the festival for the rest. Also a big thank you to the whole population of Manchester for supporting the festivities and making it reknown all over the UK, by all means please feel free to travel along Wilmslow road and join in to get a great sense of the buzz and excitement. Finally a huge EID MUBARAK to everyone in the UK and all over the world!!!

Going up and down the street, honking horns and causing grief is not the way other people celebrate. Tradition is prayer in the morning and the day spent visiting families and friends, and also enjoying lavish meals after a month of fasting.

eid mubarak to all

i agree, the agressive driving of cars is not a good idea, although i think this is only the younger lads, and they need to realise that they dont need to show off ! better to just keep calm, and then the police wouldent need to close wilmslow rd at times, really annoying !

Ali (Manchester)
My day was spent with the family. I feel it should be celebrated with your family and friends, just like Christmas is. I do feel the small minority who are intent on acting like louts (i.e. on wilmslow rd), spoil it for the vast majority who are there to simply have a good and peaceful night out.

m.imran
i think some people on wilmslow road do take it to far all it is bit of fun taken to far by alcohol.

ifti
spending half day with family at home and half day with mates, goin wimmy road to chill out

Lahuka
Of course the Police should be concerned with the fact that some people are driving dangerously to impress onlookers. If a Christian decided to pull off these sort of stunts during Easter or Christmas they would be dealt with accordingly, so why should it be different during Eid?
