After all, what鈥檚 trick or treating without a bounty of sweets at the end? But imagine a restaurant devoted to all things ghoulish and you鈥檙e close to the reality of The Hellfire Club. The Cheetham Hill eatery is the UK鈥檚 only horror themed restaurant and in this corner of the city, it鈥檚 All Hallow鈥檚 Eve all year round. That means diners can enjoy dressing up and getting a friendly frightening whenever they want to eat, something that owner Dave says brings in all sorts of different customers. ![]() The Hellfire Club and their hearse "It鈥檚 a fun thing that people want to do these days, instead of being all straight-laced in restaurants. There鈥檚 even people who come in capes and basques and things like that. "And it鈥檚 not just one sort of person. We have a phenomenally different range of people come, from students to engineers to nurses鈥 every walk of life you can imagine." A horror restaurant isn鈥檛 the most obvious idea, but it鈥檚 one that struck Dave as particularly fitting for his step into the culinary world, inspired by the building itself, as he explains. "I鈥檇 bought the building and was trying to work out what to do with it. I thought about converting into flats but thought it鈥檇 do better as a going concern. It鈥檚 a really weird shape and very gothy. ![]() Wine and die? Selections from the drinks list "Then I was in Ibiza, sat in my mate鈥檚 caf茅, and I looked up at the walls to see all these montages of horror movies 鈥 Boris Karloff, Vincent Price, stuff like that. I just thought, that鈥檚 it, a horror restaurant. "The truth is that it鈥檚 not in the best area, so we had to try and attract people to it, and I thought why not try this?" But Dave鈥檚 imagination wasn鈥檛 the only reason for the horror theme. There was also the matter of the building being haunted.
"Yeah, we do have a ghost. I haven鈥檛 actually seen it, but I know workmen that have. We鈥檝e had paranormal teams come down and investigate, and there鈥檚 a lot of sensitive people who鈥檝e eaten here who say there is a presence and have picked the right room." As for the food, Dave says it鈥檚 a modern European menu, though the names of the dishes aren鈥檛 the usual restaurant fare. "We have a lot of plays on the word steak, but there鈥檚 more than that. There鈥檚 Belly Of The Beast, Soup Of The Dead, Cannibal Holocaust 鈥 but they鈥檙e burgers, squid, lamb shanks, that sort of thing." Scary it may be, but thankfully, it sounds like the horror theme is kept firmly away from the plate. last updated: 31/10/07 You are in: Manchester > Features > Places > Fright bite |
