Through our Bridges project, local stations like Tembea FM, which serves communities around Lake Victoria, are delivering clearer, more reliable weather, climate and environmental coverage to help people adapt to extreme weather. This strengthened programming is opening the door to new ideas and technologies 鈥� keeping fisher folk in Kisumu safer on the lake and raising awareness of new farming techniques in Seme County that help farmers adapt to both heavy rainfall and drought.

Carolyne Oguto, a farmer from Seme County in Kenya, has experienced first-hand the impact of climate change. Radio weather updates are helping her community adapt, and improved programming is introducing new ideas and technologies. Instead of relying solely on traditional practices, farmers in her area are now trying new techniques to cope with increasing rainfall.

Nelson Ageke, a fisherman in Kisumu, says early weather information shared through radio is helping his community prepare for changing conditions on the lake 鈥� often before the day even begins. More engaging and understandable programming has reduced drowning deaths because people now know when it鈥檚 safe to go out and when to stay home. It鈥檚 also helping them plan for the fishing season: preparing harvests, repairing boats, accessing markets, and avoiding losses.

Peter Luya, a presenter at Tembea FM in Kenya, was struck by how quickly the new weather and climate broadcasts began saving lives. The fishing community on Lake Victoria told him the updates had transformed their safety on the water 鈥� and that this year they鈥檇 had no weather related accidents. He says the partnership with 麻豆社 Media Action has reshaped Tembea FM鈥檚 programming through capacity building sessions and ongoing mentorship the station had never had before.
