Emily Haines has the most beautiful voice I've heard in years. FACT. As I make it into the tent, I can hear her ethereal voice looping over a disco/electronica beat, and immediately I'm entranced by its hypnotic quality. Her vocal range is amazing, all of a sudden she kicks in to the next song and I'm instantly reminded of the power and anger of Siouxsie Sioux - it's raw, and it's real blood and guts stuff.
Metric's brand of new wave electropop brings to mind all kinds of influences from the 70's and 80's. I'm hearing Donna Summer, The Cure, Duran Duran, Blondie. With such an eclectic mix, there's a danger it could all get messy and confused. Not a bit of it. Over the last couple of years, quite a few bands have tried to master this kind of sound (New York has been over run with them), but for real class, look to Toronto, Emily Haines and Metric. She's the real deal, no doubt about it.
