The Smiths break up
August 1987
End of an era? Morrissey and Marr's songwriting partnership had been under strain for a long time due to creative differences. On the 1 August 1987, it was the NME that first announced the Smiths were going to split, as Marr said that he was going to leave the band. The NME headline 'Smiths to Split' was especially shocking as The Smiths had yet to release what would be their final studio recording 'Strangeways, Here We Come', released 10 October 1987.
