SatÌý17 March: Yet more bands...
Apologies for the late arrival of this latest blog, but I’ve been working on tomorrow’s show, while trying to listen to some of the Cds I’ve been handed over the past couple of days (I should have brought my jacket with the extra pockets really).
Without a doubt my favourite things from the past two days apart from the Pigeon Detectives raunchy gig last night: in no particular order; PatrickÌýWatson, Elvis Perkins and Cut Off Your Hands.ÌýWatson I hadn’t heard of until Thursday morning, but was tempted along to his afternoon gig at EMO’s which was so good, I went to see him again less than twelve hours later. He has an amazing voice - and a broad array of influences. And to be honest, I’m not sure the latest album (purchased yesterday morning online) really does his live show justice. But fans of Beck walk this way. It’s a mess of jazz, grunge, indie and electronica. But a beautiful mess all the same.
Cut off Your Hands are a furiously energetic four-piece from New Zealand, while Elvis Perkins is just about the only tortured singer, who shouldn’t be (tortured). Off to catch a couple of afternoon gigs next. With a bit of luck I might catch up with Ra Ra Riot who sound interesting and who a lot of people are talking about here. Also London’s Early Years are out there somewhere and another NZ based group called So So Modern, described by one scribe as NZ’s version of Forward Russia. I can see we could be very good friends indeed.
