I summered as a boy in Portaferry throughout the 50's. My family still have strong connections to the town, with several retired there. I particularly remember Blaneys and visiting the Tomelty's house on the shore road after sunday mass. Peter was just a young man then and good friends with my older brothers. the Mcmullan/Mullan clan were my mothers people. My fathers people wer mostly Portavogie. My Aunt "Dolly" managed the portaferry hotel back then.

I live in Vancouver Canada but will probably be buried at the family grave site over "windmill hill" when the time comes. Maybe we knew each other then. Drop me a line and let me know.

Yes i know how you feel i grew up in Bangor beside the crofton, i think it was a dance hall in those days,1955 onward i have great memories of the music and the noise ,lying in bed listening to all the showbands and wishing i was old enough to be there. yes these memories stay with you for the rest of your life, and may i add make everything else very dull in comparison to those childhood memories i'm now 58 but when i hear the music of the 50's....it still makes me feel like a kid.

My grandfather was called Robert Gibson and lived in one of the houses near what is now (and maybe was then, I don't know) the Portaferry Hotel. I know he married (about 1910) and went to live in Newtownards. My mother and her brothers and sisters all lived there. My mom died recently and I feel that I would like to trace my family tree. Yeah I grew up in Portaferry in the late 70's and 80's. The place has changed so much, I used to know a lot of the people, now I barely recongnise a few faces. Most of the changes are good, the town has grown and house prices have rocketed. The community aspect is still there I believe - but not to the same extent. I now live in Manchester and I can say the people here are just as friendly. But I do miss the good clean air!
