DoNation – Do Think, Do Talk, Do Register, DoNate

DoNation, a major Â鶹Éç season highlighting the issues around organ donation in the UK, launches in August 2005, commissioned by Â鶹Éç Learning and Â鶹Éç ONE.

Ìý

Nine out of ten people in the UK say they support organ donation, yet only two in ten have taken action and put their names on the NHS Organ Donor Register. At the same time, the UK has a critical shortage of organ donors (Source: UK Transplant NHS, 2005).

Ìý

DoNation will raise awareness, explain the facts, dispel myths and encourage people to make an informed decision about whether to add their name to the Register.

Ìý

The season features peaktime programmes on Â鶹Éç ONE, a dedicated website on bbc.co.uk, and radio output on Â鶹Éç Radio 1, Â鶹Éç Radio 2, Â鶹Éç Asian Network, Â鶹Éç 1Xtra and Â鶹Éç local radio.

Ìý

And, in an innovative development for the use of the interactive red button, digital satellite viewers who decide they would like to add their name to the NHS Organ Donor Register will be able to do so by pressing red: they will then be taken through a multiple-step process to enter their details. This option will be available throughout the whole season.

Ìý

Headlining DoNation on Â鶹Éç ONE are:

Ìý

Life On The List: a five-part documentary series telling personal stories about organ donation.

Ìý

Transplant (working title): following a kidney transplant from a live donor.

Ìý

An interactive Casualty/Holby City special, where viewers can vote by phone to determine the outcome of an organ donation storyline.

Ìý

An information-packed website - bbc.co.uk/donation - will offer an interactive journey through the issues, including testimonies from doctors and donor families. There is also a link to sign up to the Register, with ecards to send to friends and family to inform them of this decision.

Ìý

Liz Cleaver, Controller of Interactive Factual & Learning, says: "From Hitting Home to Fat Nation: The Big Challenge, Â鶹Éç Learning has produced some great public service initiatives in the past few years.

Ìý

"Continuing this tradition, DoNation will raise awareness of the important issues surrounding organ donation through the unique range of Â鶹Éç services."
