Editorial Standards – a Âé¶¹Éç statement


The Âé¶¹Éç is to establish an Editorial Standards Board to oversee the Corporation's response to this week's announcement of serious editorial breaches in a number of programmes.

The Board, to be chaired by the Deputy Director-General, Mark Byford, will report to the Director-General.

Ìý

The Board, which will comprise of directors of programme and content areas with other directors and senior staff, will also be attended by an independent director from the Âé¶¹Éç Executive Board, Samir Shah.

Ìý

The purpose of the Board will be to discuss key editorial standards facing the Âé¶¹Éç overall and develop policy from it; to review the Âé¶¹Éç's editorial compliance systems and ensure that the programme of action announced by the Director-General this week is implemented as a matter of priority and in full.

The Âé¶¹Éç, with the approval of the Âé¶¹Éç Trust, has appointed Will Wyatt CBE, the former Chief Executive of Âé¶¹Éç Broadcast, to conduct an independent inquiry to establish a full understanding of the events surrounding the publication by the Âé¶¹Éç at a press launch for the Âé¶¹Éç One Autumn season of misleading footage relating to Her Majesty the Queen.

Mr Wyatt's inquiry will report to the Director-General in September. The Director-General will present the report to the Âé¶¹Éç Trust in October. The findings will be made public.

1. The new Editorial Standards Board will be a sub-committee of the Âé¶¹Éç Direction Group, which is responsible for the day-to-day management of the Âé¶¹Éç.

2. Will Wyatt CBE is a former Chief Executive of Âé¶¹Éç Broadcast (1996-9) and Managing Director, Âé¶¹Éç Television (1991-6). A distinguished programme maker and television executive, he began his career as a journalist, and has been a producer and executive producer in Âé¶¹Éç Television, Head of Documentary Features and Assistant Managing Director, Network Television. As Chief Executive, Âé¶¹Éç Broadcast, he was responsible for all of the Âé¶¹Éç's output in the UK, including network television, radio, online, education and regional broadcasting. He is currently Chairman of Human Capital plc and until recently was Chairman of the University of the Arts, London. He is a Fellow and former President of the Royal Television Society.
