When young Nicholas is punished by his aunt, he seeks refuge in the magical lumber room.

But when his aunt seeks him in the garden, he can expect retribution.

Saki's fiction famously celebrates the triumph of the "human beast" over the structures of society.

Mischief, mayhem and the antic spirit of children are the stuff of his enduring tales of English life.

The first of five tales by Saki (HH Munro), dramatised by Roger Davenport.
