Pause for Thought

From Baroness Julia Neuberger, Senior Rabbi at the West London Synagogue.

We鈥檙e in the middle of the ten days of penitence in our Jewish calendar right now- it started on Jewish New Year, last Thursday, and finishes at the end of the Day of Atonement, next Saturday evening. During these ten days, we鈥檙e supposed to make amends to any human being we鈥檝e wronged during the past year, as well as think about our actions more generally and repent of any wrongdoing, especially where there鈥檚 no-one to apologise to. It鈥檚 a mini version of聽 days of reckoning, and I鈥檓 always amazed by how many little notes I get from people apologising for something they鈥檝e done they thought had upset me, something I can鈥檛 even remember. And during these ten days I ring people I think I might have offended- either by something I said or more often because I haven鈥檛 been in touch enough. It鈥檚 very hard to do- and you really have to grit your teeth to summon up the courage to say sorry to someone you think might not take it too well. But it鈥檚 enormously worthwhile. I鈥檝e become really close to one or two people who I鈥檝e apologised to over the years or they to me. It鈥檚 a spiritual exercise that鈥檚 very practical in its results-it functions as what some life coaches call 鈥榣ife laundry鈥- looking at yourself and your actions, and cleaning yourself up- your behaviour, your actions, your treatment of others. It doesn鈥檛 need just to be for Jews, though it鈥檚 part of our calendar. Regular self-examination and making one鈥檚 peace with others is very healthy for all of us. And it鈥檚 amazing how good one feels afterwards, even if exhausted. Each year, at the end of the Day of Atonement, 聽I鈥檓 聽completely washed out, but I also feel renewed, ready for the year ahead, at peace with myself and others. I think we could all gain from doing a bit of this, though I warn you it鈥檚 by no means easy.
