Episode 4
Penny Gore presents music from the 麻豆社 SSO. Sibelius: Symphony No 5 in E flat. Britten: Overture (The Building of the House). Mahler: Songs (Des Knaben Wunderhorn); Symphony No 5.
Penny Gore presents recent concerts by the 麻豆社 Scottish SO, featuring five Fifth Symphonies. Today she rounds off the week with no fewer than two 'number fives', by composers who - when they met in 1907 - discovered they held diametrically opposed views about what a Symphony should be: Gustav Mahler and Jean Sibelius. And American baritone Thomas Hampson joins the 麻豆社 SSO and Chief Conductor Donald Runnicles in a selection of Mahler's greatest songs with orchestra.
