Script
Good morning.听 May in Scotland still feels like spring to me.听 At this far end of the month, the daffodils are long gone, of course, and that glowing, sweet green of the leaves has turned darker - but there鈥檚 still a sense of newness and fragility.听 Of perfection which flits past before you鈥檝e properly greeted it.听 Every year I think, If only I could watch more carefully; be outside in the air and the green for longer 鈥 then, somehow, it could all be absorbed and understood.听
No poet expresses this kind of fretful joy better than Gerard Manley Hopkins.
Nothing is so beautiful as Spring 鈥
听听听听听听听听听听听 When weeds in wheels, shoot long and lovely and lush;
I remember snatches of this poem when I see new grass gleaming in the sun, or a shock of bluebells among the trees, or if I don鈥檛 want to come in from the evening light:
听听听听听听听听听听听 What is all this juice and all this joy?
A strain of the earth鈥檚 sweet being in the beginning
In Eden garden. - Have, get, before it cloy鈥听 听 听 听 听 听
Hopkins the Jesuit priest saw spring as the perfection of God鈥檚 creation, before the Fall. In a different way for me, these lines capture the feeling of this time of year.听 That it鈥檚 impossible to hold on to the beauty and newness we crave 鈥 and that鈥檚 why it鈥檚 so precious. It鈥檚 a graceful gift.听 The glory of new life.听 It passes.听 It is reborn.听
For the quenchless beauty of this earth, and for the love of God which surrounds us and does not fade or pass away听 鈥 we give thanks this morning.听 Amen.
