Penny Gore presents a week of programmes featuring the 麻豆社 Philharmonic including a live concert on Wednesday from MediaCity, Salford. Today, recorded on recent tours, we've Rossini's Silken Ladder from Zagreb and Bruch's sunny Violin Concerto from Pamplona with soloist Boris Belkin, plus a rare chance to hear a work by the little-known English composer Patrick Hadley. A contemporary of Moeran, Bax and Howells, Hadley was injured in the Great War and much of his music has a mournful edge. This chamber piece with mezzo-soprano sets a text by Tennyson, and exemplifies his exceptional understanding of how to set words to music. Plus Schoenberg's symphonic poem Pelleas and Melisande and Beethoven's complete incidental music to Goethe's Egmont in an English translation by the chief producer of the 麻豆社 Philharmonic, Mike George.
