Questions and Answers

Q 鈥 Why has my Hibiscus stopped flowering after several years?听 I鈥檝e had it for eigth years, it鈥檚 in acid soil and full sun.听 I also use chicken manure.

Panel (in unison) 鈥 Don鈥檛 use chicken manure!

Anne 鈥 It鈥檚 having too good a time; stop feeding it.

Matthew 鈥 Hibiscus do quite well in pots 鈥 they respond well to being strangled 鈥 so you might want to try that

Q 鈥 Could the panel advise on the correct techniques and timings for pruning overgrown Lilac trees.听 They鈥檙e in the front garden and are about 15-20ft (4.5m-6m) tall with lots of suckers.

Chris 鈥 Tackle these when you鈥檙e feeling ambitious! We鈥檙e talking about Syringa vulgaris 鈥 the broad-leaf, vigorous Lilac.听 Don鈥檛 worry about over-pruning them; if they are mature plants you can鈥檛 really.听 Cut it back about two-thirds of its total height and then select the suckers that you then want to allow to prosper.听 You will lose flowering for a short period but they will come back into flower.

I think you can prune at any time.

Q 鈥 I have a Salvia 鈥楬ot Lips鈥 鈥 this year the flowers are mainly white 鈥 how can I get the red/white flowers back?

Matthew 鈥 The Salvia 鈥楬ot Lips鈥 does this.听 It鈥檚 quite weather dependent.听 Also, the longer they are in the ground they run out of steam 鈥 so you might want to add a bit of general purpose fertiliser.听 Prune in late spring.

听

Q 鈥 I have a very vigorous Kiwi.听 It is eight-years-old 鈥 when can I expect my first flower and my first fruit?

Matthew 鈥 Kiwis like to be in pairs so it may never give you the goods if you鈥檝e only got one.

Anne 鈥 You should prune it to encourage it to flower.听 There is one called 鈥楯enny鈥 that is self-fertilising if you only want one.听

Chris 鈥 Think of it as a vine or a vitis 鈥 if you can grow grapes then you can grow Actinidia (Kiwis).听 So give it a nice sunny wall, protect it from cold winds, and train it up 6-8ft (1.8m-2.4m) on a single stem and then go horizontally.听 There is one called 鈥楽olo鈥 that is self-fertilising and will fertilise others which could be good.

听

Q 鈥 I鈥檓 replacing an old shed with a summer house and I鈥檇 like to make the area around it into a tropical glade.听 What plants can you recommend that are hardy but will give the feel of a tropical jungle?

Anne 鈥 Clerodendrum bungei because it looks very tropical.听 Also, iris confusa 鈥 the 鈥楤amboo iris鈥.听 And Persicaria 鈥楻ed Dragon鈥.

Matthew 鈥 I would go for Hydrangea 鈥榁illosa鈥 鈥 it鈥檚 a hydrangea on steroids!听 Also, Eupatorium purpureum or 鈥楯oe Pye鈥 weed.听 Thalictrum 鈥楨lin鈥 鈥 big bamboo-like plant.

Chris 鈥 Musa basjoo 鈥 the 鈥楬ardy Banana鈥.听 A must have is Tetrapanax papyrifer 鈥 huge palm-like foliage and a very delicate leaf.听 Cannas of course, start them off about Boxing Day, say, with lots of organic matter and they鈥檒l flower in April/May.听

听

Q 鈥 I don鈥檛 use sprays on my fruit or vegetables; how do I prevent my 鈥榃illiams Pears鈥 from developing acne spots?听 They are delicious but look terrible.

Chris 鈥 It could be difficult without sprays.听 Once it defoliates you need to take all the foliage away and then burn it rather than composting it.听 You need to completely clean the plant in this way.听 You will need to hope for good weather conditions too.听 A dry spring will really help.听

Anne 鈥 Generally improving the health of the plant helps.听 Dig out a planting hole and mulch around the base.听

Matthew 鈥 Taking the grass away and mulching will help to seal the spores in the ground.

听

Topical tips

Matthew 鈥 Deep clean your glass house 鈥 perfect time of year to take everything out and wash the inside thoroughly

Anne 鈥 Sowing broad beans and hardy peas 鈥 鈥楢quadulce Claudia鈥 or the 鈥榁alenciana鈥 for the broad beans. Make a double row, about a foot (30cm) apart, and set the seeds about 6 inches (15cm) apart from each other.听 The beans want to be about 2 inches (5cm) before Christmas.

Chris 鈥 Start protecting your plants from the wind 鈥 go out with a pair of loppers and prune down your shrubs to stop wind rock

听

Q 鈥 Is there anything that you would never, ever grow again?!

Chris 鈥 Dracunculus vulgaris 鈥 The Devil鈥檚 Lily or Dragon Arum鈥 it emits a rotting meat smell and stinks the house out!
