Fact Sheet
Q 鈥 My washing machine has recently died on me 鈥 any suggestions for the stainless steel drum?
听
Bob 鈥 They make fantastic planters.听 You鈥檒l need to line it with some old sacking or an old t-shirt.听 Plants that like aerated soil will like it 鈥 Citrus plants for example.听 A good thing to do is plant a Fig tree in them 鈥 the roots can get out but they do cut themselves off so it stays quite small.
听
Q 鈥 We鈥檝e got an alley which is in the sunshine for most of the day.听 Are there any fruit/veg that I can grow in containers here?
听
Pippa 鈥 Try rotating containers 鈥 so move containers from the alleyway to sunnier bits of the garden regularly.听 Paint the walls white.听 Attempt things which are leafy 鈥 so salad crops, beet, spinach 鈥 something that is up and ready to eat quickly.
听
Bob 鈥 You鈥檒l have no problem growing redcurrants, blackcurrants, or whitecurrants in big containers.听 You鈥檒l need netting to keep birds off and they won鈥檛 be as sweet as ones in the sun but they鈥檒l grow fine in the shade.听
听
Eric 鈥 You鈥檙e going to need a sack barrow for moving containers around.
听
Anne 鈥 I would green herbs 鈥 mint, parsley 鈥 they grow well in semi shade.听 Maybe even coriander too.
听
Q 鈥 My tomatoes are spindly and feeble, what can I do to give them a boost?听 They are 鈥楪ardener鈥檚 Delight鈥 and 鈥楳oneymaker鈥 varieties.听 I鈥檝e tried dilute Comfrey juice but to no avail.
听
Pippa 鈥 Are they getting enough light?
听
Bob 鈥 It鈥檚 been a hard year for tomatoes.听 I normally manage to get mine in June 鈥 in very very good years in May.听 This year I only brought some in last week.听 This is due to cold and low light.听 Nitrogen will do them some good.
听
Anne 鈥 You could use a well-balanced general-purpose liquid feed.
听
Q 鈥 We鈥檝e noticed a curious corkscrewing of the leaves of our seed-raised onions over the last two years.听 We practice crop rotation, the varieties are 鈥榃alla walla鈥, 鈥楢ilsa Craig鈥, and 鈥楤edfordshire Champion鈥.听 What is it?
听
Pippa -听 I think this is due to an Eelworm infestation.听 There鈥檚 a wonderful little Eelworm called Ditylenchus dipsaci that adores onions.听 Unfortunately, there鈥檚 nothing you can do about it.听
听
Q - 听Last November we had a Wisteria, Clematis and a Jasmine removed from an arbour.听 We discovered that the bed is only about 1.3m x 0.5m (4.2ft x 1.6ft).听 Has the patch been left long enough to plant a Climbing Rose there?
听
Anne 鈥 You could have put a Rose in almost straight away to be honest as it鈥檚 a different plant family to any of the others.听 Any idea what you鈥檒l plant?
听
Q 鈥 鈥楪enerous Gardener鈥
听
Anne 鈥 Great choice.
听
Q 鈥 We have a newly planted orchard with about ten mixed Apple, Pear and Cherry trees.听 One of the 鈥榃illiam鈥 Pears has rust spots 鈥 is this going to hurt the tree and will it spread to the others?
听
Pippa 鈥 It鈥檚 an interesting rust 鈥 almost eerie and finger-like in looks.听 There is no control for it.听 Collect and pick up infected sections and bin/burn.听 Chances of it spreading to other Pear trees is high but the others should be fine.听 Rust fungi all love damp/gloomy weather like we鈥檝e had recently 鈥 so if weather improves or if you can improve circulation that will help keep it in check.
听
Q 鈥 I have never been able to grow sweet peas in pots.听 Can you help?
听
Anne 鈥 It鈥檚 possible to grow in a pot but it would be much easier in the ground. They like really well-conditioned soil 鈥 the more organic matter the better.听 Best place is in a kitchen garden or allotment.听 For a pot you鈥檒l need a container of 45-60cm (17inch-23inch) across, good potting compost (50/50 John Innes No 2/and soilless potting mix and some of my own garden compost too.听 I鈥檇 use Beech/Hazel from the garden for supports.听 Sow in October or February.听 Put them in long modules.听 Then lift the roots out carefully, never let them get dry, as soon as they鈥檝e begun to climb give them liquid feed.听 They鈥檙e not going to grow in compost alone.
听
Q 鈥 I leave the seed heads on my Alliums 鈥 because they鈥檙e attractive and for the birds 鈥 but their numbers are reducing.听 Should I deadhead them? 鈥楶urple Sensation鈥 in particular has dwindled.
听
Bob 鈥 I leave them because they鈥檙e good for the insects.听 Leaving the flower on is brilliant but as soon as it forms seed it takes energy out of the bulb.听 So chop as soon as it finishes flowering.
听
Anne 鈥 I think the soil is too wet in winter and some of the bigger bulbs are rotting off.听 Raising the bed up slightly, say 6-8 inches (15-20cm), would help.
听
Pippa 鈥 If you鈥檙e mulching be careful not to suffocate the bulbs.听 Whack on some sulphate of potash too.
听
Q 鈥 Which weed, if you had to pick one, would you most like to destroy?
听
Pippa 鈥 I can鈥檛 just pick one! Stinging Nettles and 鈥楬airy Bittercress鈥
听
Anne 鈥 A Creeping Cinqefoil called Potentilla reptans
听
Bob 鈥 I don鈥檛 like ones with thorns and those little ones like the Potentillas and the Oxalis
听
Eric 鈥 Bracken
