Fact Sheet
Q 鈥 I鈥檓 moving into a house where the garden is leased by the electricity board.听 I鈥檓 not allowed to plant trees or deep-rooted shrubs.听 What can I plant?
听
Bob 鈥 Herbaceous plants would be good.听 And you can grow things in containers 鈥 particularly fruit trees.听 Consider apples and pears.听 Climbers would give you height and variety too.
Bunny 鈥 Hazel, Hawthorn. Multi-stem Medlars. Put them in baseless pots. You won鈥檛 need to interfere with water and feed.
Anne 鈥 You鈥檒l need big grasses and big herbaceous perennials. Look at Miscanthus sinensis 鈥 lots of varieties of those.听 Plants like the tall sunflowers (Helianthus), there鈥檚 one called salicifolius that鈥檚 got thin leaves.听 Centaueas too.听 Crambe cordifolia 鈥 the large version of the Sea Cabbage.听
Bunny 鈥 Bear in mind that big Oak trees鈥 roots often only go down 500mm (20 inches) or so.
听
Q 鈥 When and how can I move some mature Box Balls 鈥 about 60cm (23 inches) in diameter 鈥 to a different location in the garden?
听
Bunny 鈥 Box is one of the easiest plants to move because of its shallow root system. I have moved them in July but you must have moisture to hand when you replant.听 Never overhead water with Box, due to Box Blight.听 Research suggests late-August is the best time.
Anne 鈥 I鈥檇 go for September or April.
听
Q 鈥 I have a Prunus cerasifera hedge in my garden which looks gorgeous for two weeks of the year but it鈥檚 mostly top growth 鈥 what can I plant to fill it in?
听
Anne 鈥 I鈥檇 go for Euonymous japonicas and Euonymous fortunei 鈥楽ilver Queen鈥, evergreens that could grow up in between.听
Bob 鈥 If it鈥檚 well drained I would go for Hollies.
Bunny 鈥 Yew hedges get like this and often people plant Box to fill it out.听 Bit of Vibernum tinus too.听
听
Q 鈥 A weed was brought into my garden and it has now spread everywhere.听 What is it and how do I get rid of it?
听
Anne 鈥 I think it is a kind of Ground Ivy
Bob 鈥 Glechoma is its Latin lame.听 I put down wet newspaper on top of the weeds between the plants and then mulch on top of that. If it shows its head then I put more newspaper and more mulch on top of it to stifle the weed.
听
Q 鈥 I have an old Acer tree 鈥 probably 40 years old and 10-12ft high (3-3.5m).听 This year, some of the branches have no leaves at all.听 Is this a problem and, if so, what do I need to do?
听
Bunny 鈥 It doesn鈥檛 sound too good probably caused by the wet.听 I鈥檇 put down a deciduous bark mulch all the way over its root zone, but not against the trunk.听 That will increase root aeration and fight some disease so should perk it up a bit.听 Then in August I would prune out the dead bits.听 I was reading about Honey fungus recently and some research says that if you put Willow bark mulch around affected trees that can help 鈥 it鈥檚 thought that the salicylic acid in the Willow helps the tree fight off the fungus.
听
Anne 鈥 I鈥檝e seen trees suffer late from the cold winter we had in 2010.听 I鈥檝e seen several Wisterias and Vinbernum plicatum 鈥楳ariesii鈥, that were caused by this cold shock. So it could be that.
听
Q 鈥 We are about to create a sensory garden to bring the feel of the Fells into it.听 We will have rockeries made from some of the stones brought down in the floods.听 What plants would give colour, texture and scent to the rockeries?
听
Bob 鈥 You鈥檝e got to have Gorse.听
Anne 鈥 Create a shaded end and put woodland shrubs 鈥 like small Acer palmatum 鈥楧issectum鈥. Ferns too.听 Blue Meconopsis too would be nice here.
Eric 鈥 Juniper
Bunny 鈥 Multi-stemmed Crataegus crus-galli 鈥 a different form of Hawthorn.听
Bob 鈥 Lily of the Valley
Eric 鈥 Saxifrage
Anne 鈥 Thrift
听
Topical tips 鈥 Bunny and Bob mention: 鈥楴ight-scented鈥 Phlox (Zaluzianskya ovata)
听
Q 鈥 I have a former vegetable patch 鈥 south-facing, surrounded by paths, at the bag of the garden 鈥 what can I plant for impact in the autumn?
听
Anne 鈥 Trees like Liquid Ambers or Rowans 鈥 eg 鈥楯oseph Rock鈥.听
Bunny 鈥 Multi-stem Cotinus coggygria (the 鈥楽moke Bush鈥). Clematis durandii.听 Martagon lillies underneath. 听Camassias coming up through too.听
Bob 鈥 Cardoons or globe artichokes.听 There鈥檚 an Italian one with a red head that looks great.听 Also, Jerusalem Artichokes.听 The variety 鈥楩useau鈥 has a scented sunflower head on top.
听
Q 鈥 What combination of two or three plants have you really been looking forward to seeing this year?
听
Bob 鈥 Chinese lantern 鈥 the Physalis.听 That鈥檚 grown well this year.听 I鈥檝e put it under a Passiflora, the hardy passion fruit.听
Anne 鈥 I鈥檝e got a mature Vibernum farreri with a 鈥楥hocolate Vine鈥 (Akebium quinata) growing through it.听
Bunny 鈥 My favourite Dahlia - 鈥楾homas Edison鈥 鈥 with annual Cleomes.听 And then a new Salvia called 鈥楲ove and Wishes鈥.听听
