Fact Sheet

Q 鈥 We share our garden with three chickens, can you recommend chicken-proof plants that will add colour to our garden?

听

Bob 鈥 There鈥檚 not much I鈥檓 afraid! The only thing I can get away with is Globe Artichokes.听

听

Pippa 鈥 We put up temporary barriers - eg netting or micromesh and canes -听 but it is difficult to stop them!

听

Q 鈥 We have a narrow, shallow rill (half a brick wide) in which I鈥檇 like to plant blocks of water marginal plants.听 Can you suggest plants for colour and texture?听 The PH is around 7.

听

Anne 鈥 Geum rivale.听 鈥楩rogbit鈥 or Hydrocharis which has little floating leaves.听

听

Bob 鈥 Watercress

听

Pippa 鈥 You could try growing Wasabi.听 Bog irises would need a bit of work but would be worth it

听

Anne 鈥 Iris ensata (Japanese water iris)

听

Q 鈥 Can you suggest something to grow up the side of the house please? It鈥檚 mostly in the shade and it will need to be in a pot.

听

Bob 鈥 Yellow and green Ivy.听 鈥楪oldheart鈥 in particular is great.听

听

Pippa 鈥 Put a Clematis in, using the Ivy as support.听 Montanas can get a bit out of hand but are great.听 鈥楨lizabeth鈥 is one of my favourites; 鈥楩reda鈥 too with its red wine-coloured foliage.听

听

Q 鈥 We have a large Choisya 鈥楳exican Orange Blossom鈥 鈥 about 5ft tall x 3ft wide (1.5m x 0.9m) 鈥 but we need to move it.听 When and how should I do it?

听

Anne 鈥 Wait until Spring.听 March would be best.听 Keep it wet.听 Also, thin it out now so it鈥檚 not so big when you need to move it.

听

Bob 鈥 They don鈥檛 like being moved鈥 it might actually be easier to buy a new one!

听

Q 鈥 Can you recommend environmentally-friendly ways to control slugs and snails?

听

Pippa 鈥 Nematodes for slugs.听 For snails put up physical barriers like pine needles or copper tape.听

听

Bob 鈥 Put cabbage or lettuce leaves down nearby as they prefer wilting leaves

听

Anne 鈥 Ferric phosphate tablets.听 Or maybe the sheep鈥檚 wool pellets.听 Use them sparingly though.听

听

Q 鈥 What plants will attract insects at night and, therefore, bats into my garden?

听

Bob 鈥 Lime tree if your garden is big enough.听 Honeysuckles.听

听

Anne 鈥 Itea ilicifolia.听 Araujia sericifera 鈥 same family as Hoya 鈥 very easy to grow from seed.听

听

Bob 鈥 This year my garden has been ravaged by Pocket Plum disease, Blackspot, Powdery mildew, and now my flowering Cherry tree has dropped all of its leaves.听 Is this related and should I cut the tree back?

听

Pippa 鈥 Those are all quite separate infections but are all encouraged by damp, non-summery weather so I think it鈥檚 the weather conditions that鈥檚 caused the Cherry to drop 鈥 too difficult to pinpoint it.

听

Anne 鈥 It can be a magnesium deficiency with Cherries.听 Applying Epsom Salts can help.听

听

Bob 鈥 Seaweed solution might help too

听

Q 鈥 What is wrong with my Yucca?

听

Pippa 鈥 It鈥檚 a fungal leaf spot.听 Cut off the badly infected leaves and never water from above.听 Toughen it up with some sulphate of potash too.

听

Q 鈥 I would normally throw my slugs over the fence into my neighbour鈥檚 garden but I鈥檓 looking for an alternative. Suggestions?

听

Anne 鈥 I pop them, and slugs, into my compost

听

Bob 鈥 I鈥檝e made a snail/slug slow composter for mine. Like a wormery but with slugs and snails.

听

Pippa 鈥 Beware throwing them as they have rather strong homing skills 鈥 so they鈥檒l be back! Ducks love them... so if you know someone with ducks, give the slugs to them.听听
