Fact Sheet

Q 鈥 I attempted edibles for the first time this year.听 What can I grow over winter please?

听

Bunny 鈥 Broccoli. Brussel sprouts or kale maybe.听 Watercress is quite good. Chervil and coriander too.听

听

Anne 鈥 Salad rocket.听 American land cress is a great winter salad plant.听 Really you need to sow in August though.听 You could try broad beans (鈥楢quadulce Claudia鈥) and Pea Meteor.

听

Q 鈥 My 鈥榁ictoria鈥 plum tree isn鈥檛 bearing fruit; why?

听

Anne 鈥 It is only three years old so it should be ok 鈥 maybe it鈥檚 just having a growth spurt.听 Feed it with high potash and then mulch over in spring.听 That should help.

听

Bunny 鈥 It could be bullfinches taking the buds.

听

Matthew 鈥 My plum tree produced one plum this year. My 鈥楤eurre Hardy鈥 pear produced one pear too.听 Not a great year for them.

听

Q 鈥 What can you recommend to go around our new wildlife pond?

听

Anne 鈥 Bog flag iris.听 Meadowsweet.听 Purple loosestrife.听

听

Bunny 鈥 Get coir rolls and pin them round the edge of the pond liner and that will help cover the liner up nice and quickly.听 Have marsh marigolds (Caltha palustris).听

听

Matthew 鈥 Structural planting is important.听 Salix britzensis (a willow).听 Cornus (stem-coloured Dogwoods).听 Flaviramea is a vivid green variety.听 Sanguinea too - often called 鈥楳idwinter Bonfire鈥櫶

听

Anne 鈥 Water Mint 鈥 you can make mint sorbet from it!

听

Q 鈥 I have Kaffir Lilies that are in full flower 鈥 how and when can I move them?

听

Anne 鈥 You鈥檙e talking about (Schizostylis).听 They are really easy to move and you can move at any time.

听

Q 鈥 If I leave my Begonias in their hangers and overwinter them in the garage will they produce a good display again next year?

听

Matthew 鈥 Because of their fleshy stems they鈥檙e not the easiest to get through winter.

听

Anne 鈥 The textbook would recommend taking them out of the basket 鈥 I鈥檝e never tried leaving them in.

听

Bunny 鈥 It鈥檚 not a big job do take them out. I would do it now and then get them in fresh compost next year.

听

Q 鈥 What鈥檚 the best way to store tulip bulbs in order to use them again next year?

听

Anne 鈥 You want to leave tulips to fully die back鈥 but if you can鈥檛 leave them till then move them to a trench somewhere they can.听 Dry them off on racks in a cool, airy place and then you can leave them.

听

Bunny 鈥 They will never be as good as the first year I鈥檓 afraid

听

Matthew 鈥 You could plant them overly deep (5-8x the bulb鈥檚 size) in the first place 鈥 so they鈥檙e below the roots of what you鈥檙e going to plant next.

听

Q 鈥 When is the best time to scarify a lawn?

听

Matthew - Autumn
